Celebrating 75 Years of Protecting Public Health in Pasco County

Honoring a Legacy of Service Since 1951

On May 13, 2026, the Pasco County Mosquito Control District (PCMCD) proudly celebrated its 75th Anniversary with community leaders, elected officials, agency partners, former and current employees, and stakeholders from across Pasco County.

The event commemorated 75 years of dedicated public service and recognized the generations of professionals whose work has helped protect public health, support economic vitality, and improve quality of life throughout our community.

Founded by voter referendum in 1951 as the West Pasco Mosquito Control District, the organization has evolved from a small local operation focused on mosquito source reduction into a countywide public health agency serving all residents of Pasco County. Through decades of growth, scientific advancement, and operational innovation, the District has remained steadfast in its mission to reduce mosquito-borne disease risk and enhance the livability of our community.

Mosquito Control: Essential Public Health Infrastructure

During the anniversary program, Executive Director Adriane Rogers reflected on the PCMCD’s history and emphasized the critical role mosquito control plays as a component of community infrastructure.

Like transportation systems, stormwater management, and public utilities, mosquito control provides an essential public service that supports public health, outdoor recreation, tourism, economic development, and community resilience.

Through surveillance-driven decision making, integrated mosquito management strategies, advanced technologies, and highly trained personnel, the PCMCD works year-round to reduce mosquito populations and mitigate disease risks.

The program also highlighted the importance of maintaining readiness for emerging mosquito-borne disease threats and supporting emergency response efforts following severe weather events. In the aftermath of hurricanes and flooding, mosquito populations can increase rapidly, making timely surveillance and control activities an important component of community recovery and public health protection.

Recognizing Those Who Made 75 Years Possible

A special portion of the celebration was dedicated to recognizing the current and former employees, leaders, and Board members whose commitment and professionalism have shaped the PCMCD over the past seven and a half decades.

From field technicians and pilots to mechanics, laboratory professionals, educators, and administrative staff, generations of employees have worked behind the scenes to protect the residents of Pasco County. Their dedication, expertise, and service remain the foundation of PCMCD’s success and its ability to meet evolving public health challenges.

PCMCD also expressed appreciation for its many partners throughout local, state, and federal government, public health, emergency management, academia, industry, and the broader community whose collaboration has strengthened mosquito control efforts over the years.

Official Recognition from Pasco County

As part of the anniversary celebration, the PCMCD was honored to receive a formal proclamation from the Pasco County Board of County Commissioners recognizing PCMCD’s 75 years of public service and its continued commitment to protecting the health and well-being of Pasco County residents.

The proclamation honored the District's history of innovation, public health protection, emergency response preparedness, and community service while acknowledging the collective efforts of past and present employees, Board members, and community partners who have contributed to the organization's success.

The recognition serves as a meaningful reminder that effective mosquito control is a vital public service and an important component of the community infrastructure that helps Pasco County remain a safe, healthy, and desirable place to live, work, and visit.

PCMCD extends its sincere appreciation to the Pasco County Board of County Commissioners for commemorating this milestone and for recognizing the important role mosquito control plays in supporting a healthy, resilient, and thriving community.

Looking Ahead

While the anniversary celebration provided an opportunity to reflect on PCMCD’s history, it also served as a reminder of the responsibility that lies ahead.

As Pasco County continues to grow, the PCMCD remains committed to science-based decision making, operational excellence, transparency, innovation, and responsible stewardship of public resources. By building upon the legacy established over the past 75 years, the PCMCD stands ready to meet future challenges and continue protecting public health for generations to come.

Thank you to all who joined us in celebrating this important milestone and to the many individuals whose dedication has made 75 years of service possible!
