Introducing Our New Electric ULV Truck-Mounted Spray Systems

In 2025, PCMCD launched a major upgrade to its fleet with the integration of electric-powered Ultra Low Volume (ULV) sprayers, bringing quieter, cleaner, and more cost-effective adult mosquito control to Pasco County.

Benefits of the New Electric ULV Sprayers:

  • Whisper-quiet operation: These electric units are approximately 30 decibels quieter than our older gas-powered machines, so you may not hear them, but they’re still hard at work.
  • Eco-friendly performance: They reduce fuel use, cut down on emissions, and lower the District’s carbon footprint, without compromising effectiveness.
  • Cost savings: Provided at no cost to the District through federal CDC grant funding, each unit saves taxpayers about $10,000 annually in fuel, maintenance, and service costs.
  • Advanced visibility & tracking: Units are equipped with bright LED lights and amber cab beacons to indicate active spraying. All vehicles are GPS-monitored to ensure accurate and targeted treatments.

When and Why We Spray:

  • Timing matters: Applications begin about 30 minutes after sunset, when most mosquitoes are active and pollinators like bees and butterflies are not.
  • Target-driven: Spraying is not on a fixed schedule. We use adult mosquito surveillance data, including trap collections and field reports, to determine if, when, and where to spray.
  • Safe & effective: ULV spraying disperses a fine mist of insecticide that quickly knocks down active, flying mosquitoes, without leaving residue or harming people, pets, or property.

Surveillance-Driven Decisions

Every truck-based treatment, whether larvicide or adulticide, is guided by:

  • Daily trap collections and field data to monitor mosquito populations
  • Breeding site inspections by field technicians
  • Environmental factors such as rainfall, flooding, or container presence

We align treatment type and timing with the mosquito life cycle, ensuring that every application is:

  • Appropriate for the life stage present
  • Scientifically justified
  • Environmentally conscious
